Why the Day Is So Long

Against that you get one entry slot and a maximum of 2h30m inside the Llaqta for standard circuits, so a 12-hour card like the full-day group tour from Peru Andes Top spends most of its hours on rails, not at the ruins. PeruRail's own station table makes the range visible: from San Pedro station in Cusco the journey to Machu Picchu station is 4h30m, from Poroy it is 3h30m, from Ollantaytambo it drops to 2h10m, which is why several operators, including Happy Gringo and Aremika Travel, reach Ollantaytambo by road from Cusco first and start the train leg there. Trains arrive at Machu Picchu station in the town, not at the citadel itself, so a bus ride up still stands between you and the entrance, covered on Aguas Calientes to Machu Picchu.

What the 2h30m Limit Means for Your Slot

Entry is sold by hourly slot, from 06:00 through 15:00. For entries between 06:00 and 13:00 the maximum permanence inside is 2h30m from the moment you walk in. The site closes at 17:30 and re-entry is not permitted except for force majeure.

In months of regular demand you get up to 30 minutes of arrival tolerance after your slot, and in high-demand months, 1 June to 15 October plus 30-31 December, tolerance stretches to 45 minutes. There is no tolerance at all at the Machupicchu Mountain, Waynapicchu or Huchuypicchu control points. Build slack into the morning, because a delayed train eats your tolerance, and the ticket is valid only for the date and time purchased with no date or name changes.

Cards With the Entry Ticket Bundled

Three cards bundle the admission ticket. The VIPAC Travel day trip includes admission to the citadel, Happy Gringo provides the Machu Picchu ticket and circuit according to availability, and Aremika Travel includes the entrance ticket with the circuit chosen subject to time-slot availability. None of these cards promises a specific circuit: under the system in force since 1 June 2024 there are 3 circuits and 10 routes, and your route fixes which parts of the site you see. Ask the operator which route you are likely to get if it matters to you.

Guide-Only and Unclear Bundles

Where a card does not state that entry is included, the price buys transport and guiding rather than admission. Peru Andes Top, LimaTours and Trekzy all fall in this category, so read their option descriptions carefully. One more inclusion worth checking is the Consettur bus: trains stop at Machu Picchu station in the town, and a bus is required from there up to the entrance. Only the Aremika card states it includes the round-trip Consettur bus.

Train Class and Station Differences

The train tier is the biggest hidden variable in the price. LimaTours sells a choice of Tourist or Superior class seats and warns that the class changes what you pay. Trekzy flags more than one premium train tier at checkout, and Aremika Travel rides the Expedition or Voyager service between Ollantaytambo and Aguas Calientes. Station choice changes the day too: PeruRail boards at San Pedro in central Cusco or at Poroy, about 20 minutes out of town, with journey times of 4h30m and 3h30m respectively; starting from Ollantaytambo cuts the rail leg to 2h10m. Luggage rules are tight on every service: PeruRail allows one carry-on piece up to 8 kg and 115 linear cm, and Inca Rail allows one piece up to 8 kg and 118 linear cm with no on-board racks.

What the Train Time Actually Buys
